CLAES GUNNARSSON - cello

Born in Gothenburg, Sweden 1976. Claes started to learn the cello and the piano at the age of seven. When he was sixteen he entered the Gothenburg College of Music where he in 1996 got his Master of Music and Soloist Diploma. 1996-99 he was a student at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, studying with the world renowned cellist Ralph Kirshbaum.

As one of the leading cellists in Sweden, he has appeard as a soloist in most of the European countries, New Zealand and China. Recent perfomances includes concertos with Gothenburg Symphony Orchetra, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Umeå Symphony Orchestra and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra as well as Musica Vitae, Royal Northern Chamber Orchestra, London Chamber Orchestra and Swedish Chamber Orchestra.
He has been invited to the most prestigous festivals in Sweden such as the Båstad, Umeå, Sandviken and Gotland Chambermusic Festivals as well as Music by the lake Siljan, Peterborough Music Festival, Manchester international Cellofestival and Kronberg Cellofestival performing with Roland Pöntinen, Lynn Harrell Christian Zacharias among others.

Claes has won several prizes and awards including Guido Vecchi award, Neeme Järvi scholarship, first prizewinner of the Ljunggrenska competition and prizewinner in the 1998 Kronberg Cellofestival. Between 1998-2000 he was chosed to be Artist in Residence at the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation. He did several recordings wich has been broadcasted succesfully in the whole Europe.

After his debut in 1998 with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra performing the Dvorak concerto his was immediately invited to be the principal cellist of the orchestra. He´s had this position since 1999.
Claes is playing on a cello made by D. Tecchler 1707 which is a loan from the Järnåkerfoundation in Stockholm.

CLAES GUNNARSSON - cello

Claes Gunnarsson har den senaste tiden placerat sig som en av landets främsta cellister. Han har blivit prisad i de flesta världsdelar för sin djupt musikaliska kunskap, innerligt varma uttryck och ödmjukhet på scen.

Claes föddes i Göteborg 1976 och började spela cello och piano som sjuåring. Han blev antagen som 16-åring till Musikhögskolan i Göteborg där han 1998 tog sitt solistdiplom. 1996-99 studerade han för den välkände cellisten Ralph Kirshbaum vid Royal Northern College of Music i Manchester.

1998 blev Claes utsedd till ”Artist in Residence” av Sveriges Radio vilket innebar att han under en tvåårsperiod gjorde ett stort antal inspelningar som sänds regelbundet i Sverige och övriga Europa. Sedan dess har Claes konserterat i större delen av Europa, Asien och USA. Den senaste tiden har han gett konserter med symfoniorkestrarna i Helsingborg, Stockholm, Malmö, Shanghai, Umeå och Göteborg, samt Musica Vitae, Svenska Kammarorkestern, Västerås Sinfonietta, Sundsvalls kammarorkester, Royal Northern Chamber Orchestra och London Soloists. År 2000 gjorde han sin Londondebut (Queen Elisabeth Hall) tillsammans med violinisten Sara Trobäck i Brahms dubbelkonsert.

Claes är en flitig kammarmusiker och har tillsammans med Sara Trobäck och Per Lundberg bildat Trio Posiedon som har blivit en av landets mest eftertraktade kammarmusikensembler.

Han har gästat betydande festivaler som La Folle Journée i Nantes, Music@Menlo i San Fransisco samt Yuri Temirkanovs Vinterfestival i St Petersburg och etablerade konsertarenor som Wigmore Hall i London, Neurosciences Institute i La Jolla, Kalifornien samt St Petersburgs Filharmoni.
Claes har även gett konserter vid Manchesters internationella Cellofestival 1998 samt Kronbergs Celloakademie 1999 där världens främsta cellister medverkar.

År 2000 flyttade Claes till Göteborg där han f n kombinerar sin solokarriär med en solocellisttjänst i Göteborgs Symfoniker. Han är dessutom den här säsongen gästande solocellist i London Symphony Orchestra.
Claes spelar på en cello byggd av David Tecchler daterad 1707, som han lånar av Järnåkerfonden i Stockholm.
