ROLAND PÖNTINEN - piano

The Swedish pianist Roland Pöntinen made his debut in 1981
with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and has since then performed with major orchestras in Europe, the USA, Korea, South America, Australia and New Zealand. He has co-operated with Myung-Whun Chung, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Neeme Järvi, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Leif Segerstam, Evgeny Svetlanov and David Zinman, to name a few.

Highlights include performances with the Philharmonia Orchestra in Paris and London, Los Angeles Philharmonic in the Hollywood Bowl, with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in Glasgow and Edinburgh as well as appearances at the London Proms where he has played both the Grieg Piano Concerto and the Ligeti Piano Concerto.

Thanks to an insatiable musical appetite and a stupendous technique he has acquired a vast repertoire ranging from Bach to Ligeti. The emphasis is on the ”golden era” in piano literature from the 19th century – through the first half of the 20th century with composers such as Debussy, Busoni, Szymanowski and Rachmaninov.

Roland Pöntinen is a passionate chamber musician and has taken part in innumerable constellations but plays regularly only with a few musicians such as the violinist Ulf Wallin, with whom he has recorded all the Reger Violin Sonatas, Martin Fröst, Barbara Hendricks and his piano duo colleague Love Derwinger.

He has participated in a great number of festivals including Berliner Festwochen, Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, La Roque d’Anthéron Piano Festival, Piano Rarities in Schloss vor Husum, Styriarte in Graz and the Edinburgh Festival.

During 2007 Pöntinen was invited to the Verbier Festival and to the Klavier Festival Ruhr. His performance in Ruhr/Essen, with works by Busoni, Saariaho and Chopin was filmed for a documentary & DVD within the series ”Legato”, all produced and directed by Pars Media /Munich.

In 2008 he was re-invited to the Piano Rarities Festival at Schloss vor Husum and also performed music by Shostakovich and Prokofiev with the Swedish Radio Orchestra and Esa-Pekka Salonen at a special televised concert in Stockholm , celebrating Salonen’s 50th birthday.

During 2009 Pöntinen will play Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and in Finland he will record a concerto dedicated to him: ”Seeds of Time” (2004) by the Finnish composer Veli-Matti Puumala. One of his recital programmes this season has the title ”Maurice and the Three Romantic Musketeers”, where pieces by Ravel are juxtaposed to works by Chopin, Liszt’s ”Réminiscences de Boccanegra” and Schumann’s great C major Fantasy. 2009 also marks the beginning of a three year project with Pöntinen performing the thirty-two Piano Sonatas by Beethoven.

Roland Pöntinen has made more than 90 recordings , among the most recent being soloworks by Busoni on c p o, enthusiasticly received in Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine and Rachmaninov’s Etudes-Tableaux on PAN-CLASSICS as well as the BIS releases ”Pianorama”– a collection of piano music used in films by, among others , Fellini, Kubrick, L. Malle and Ingmar Bergman and ”Pöntinen plays Szymanowski”. He has also recorded for Philips, c p o, Arte Nova and EMI.

Roland Pöntinen is an active composer and in 1998 his ”Blue Winter” had its acclaimed World Première in Philadelphia and in Carnegie Hall , New York, with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Wolfgang Sawallisch. Pöntinen is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and in 2001 he received the Litteris et Artibus – a royal medal for recognition of eminent skills in the artistic field.

Pianisten Roland Pöntinen debuterade 1981 med Kungliga Filharmoniska Orkestern i Stockholm och har sen dess framträtt med de ledande orkestrarna i Europa, USA, Korea, Sydamerika, Australien och Nya Zeeland. Han har samarbetet med dirigenter som Myung-Whun Chung, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Neeme Järvi, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Leif Segerstam, Evgeny Svetlanov och David Zinman.

Höjdpunkter i karriären inkluderar konserter med Philharmonia Orchestra i Paris och London, med Los Angeles Philharmonic i Hollywood Bowl, med Scottish Chamber Orchestra i Glasgow och Edinburgh liksom framträdanden vid London Proms där han spelat både Griegs Pianokonsert och Ligetis Pianokonsert.

Tack vare en omättlig musikalisk aptit och en suverän teknik har Roland Pöntinen byggt upp en imponerande repertoar som sträcker sig från Bach till Ligeti. Tyngdpunkten ligger på pianolitteraturens gyllene period från 1800-talet fram till 1900-talets först hälft med komponister som Debussy, Busoni, Szymanowski och Rachmaninov.

Roland Pöntinen är en hängiven kammarmusiker och han har varit del av en stor mängd musikaliska konstellationer men spelar på mer regelbunden basis enbart med ett fåtal musiker så som violinisten Ulf Wallin, som han spelat in alla Regers Violin Sonatas med, Martin Fröst, Barbara Hendricks och hans piano duo kollega Love Derwinger.

Under 2009 kommer Roland Pöntinen att spela Prokofievs Pianokonsert No. 2 med Kungliga Filharmonin i Stockholm och i Finland kommer han att spela in den finske komponisten Veli-Matti Puumalas pinokonsert Seeds of Time” (2004) som dedicerats till honom. Ett av hans kommande recitalprogram går under namnet ” Maurice and the Three Romantic Musketeers” där verk av Ravel ställs mot Chopin, Liszts Réminiscences de Boccanegra och Schumanns Stora C-dur Fantasi. 2009 påbörjar Roland Pöntinen också ett treårsprojekt då han kommer att framföra alla Beethovens 32 Pianosonater.
